New York City

No Sleep ’Till Brooklyn

AVODAH Corps members reside in two different batim ("houses") in Brooklyn, within a half hour walk of each other and close to public transportation. The Westminster bayit ("house") is located in the Beverly Square West section of Flatbush—an ethnically, racially, and economically diverse neighborhood, home to Irish, Italian, Jewish, and African-American communities. The Beverly Square West neighborhood is a residential area with many Victorian homes.

There is a Reform synagogue, food co-op, coffee shops, a public library, several small grocery stores and a few restaurants in the neighborhood. The house is a short walk to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

About two miles away is our second AVODAH bayit. Located in Midwood, this house is in the heart of one of Brooklyn's most exciting areas. The area boasts a vibrant Jewish life, with three synagogues (Conservative, Orthodox, Reform) under a mile from the bayit and a fourth shul (a sephardic community center) just over two miles away. Four kosher restaurants--meat and dairy--are located in the area as well.

But Midwood is not exclusively Jewish.  In true New York fashion, communities of Russian, Hatian, Pakistani, and Indian families all call Midwood their home, creating an ethnically (and tastily) diverse neighborhood. Corps members can also enjoy the local library and movie theatre. To learn more about Midwood, check out this New York Times article.

For corps members living in both the Westminister and Midwood batim, supermarkets, Target, and the Kings Plaza shopping mall are just a short trek away. And with Brooklyn College in the neighborhood, intellectual and cutlural events are at your doorstep.
